Which Odoo edition is right for you?

Odoo ships in two editions. Community is free and open-source: you get the core apps (CRM, Sales, Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Point of Sale, Website, eCommerce, Project, HR, and basic accounting through Invoicing) and you run it on your own server. Enterprise is the paid edition. It keeps everything in Community and adds full accounting, Odoo Studio, Helpdesk, Field Service, Payroll, Documents, Sign, the mobile app, AI features, and Odoo's own hosting and support.

Enterprise itself comes on two paid plans. The Standard plan (about CA$35.20 per user per month, billed yearly) includes every app and runs on Odoo Online. The Custom plan (about CA$55 per user per month, billed yearly) adds Odoo Studio, multi-company consolidation, external API access, and the choice of Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or your own server. Both allow unlimited users at the per-user rate.

The short version: most businesses land on Standard for the full app suite with hosting and support built in. You move to Custom when you need Studio, multi-company, or custom modules on Odoo.sh. Running Community (or Enterprise on your own server) means you pick where it lives. These are the hosts most Odoo self-hosters use, and roughly what a small deployment runs per month. Server and ops costs are separate from any Odoo license.

What's the difference between Odoo Community and Enterprise?
Community is the free, open-source edition (LGPL-3). It covers CRM, Sales, Invoicing (basic accounting), Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Point of Sale, Website, eCommerce, Project, HR, and Email Marketing, and you self-host it. Enterprise is the paid edition. On top of everything in Community it adds full Accounting (bank sync, AI invoice OCR, budgets), Odoo Studio, Helpdesk, Field Service, Marketing Automation, Payroll, Documents, Sign, the native mobile app, AI features across modules, and the Gantt, Map, Cohort, and Grid views. Enterprise also includes hosting on Odoo Online or Odoo.sh, official support with an SLA, and automated version upgrades.
How much does Odoo cost per user?

What's the difference between the Standard and Custom plans?
Both are Enterprise, and both include every Odoo app. Standard runs on Odoo Online only and you customize with Odoo Studio's building blocks. Custom costs more per user and adds four things: Odoo Studio's full power, multi-company consolidation, external API access, and the choice to host on Odoo.sh or your own server instead of Odoo Online, which is what lets you run custom Python modules and third-party App Store apps. If you fit the standard apps and want the simplest setup, Standard is enough. If you need custom code or multi-company, you need Custom.
Is Odoo Community really free?
Yes. Community Edition has no license cost and allows unlimited users. It's open-source under LGPL-3. You do pay for the server it runs on and for any help you bring in to set it up and keep it running, but the software itself is free. What Community leaves out is the Enterprise-only apps and features, and Odoo's own hosting and support.
Can I self-host Odoo Enterprise?
Yes. Enterprise can run on Odoo Online, on Odoo.sh, or on your own server (on-premise), but self-hosting Enterprise requires the paid Custom plan license. Community is the edition that's free to self-host. Either way, when you self-host you own the server, backups, security, and updates. Odoo.sh is the middle ground: Odoo runs the cloud infrastructure and gives you staging environments, while you keep the ability to run custom modules.
Which Odoo edition should a small business choose?
Most small and mid-sized businesses are best served by Enterprise on the Standard plan (Odoo Online), because it includes full accounting, hosting, support, and automatic upgrades for one predictable per-user fee. Choose the Custom plan when you need Odoo Studio, multi-company consolidation, external API access, or custom modules on Odoo.sh. Community self-hosted makes sense mainly when you have in-house technical staff, a tight budget, and workflows that fit the free apps.
